When the Research Gets Weaponised Against Late Autistic Discovery
A response to Uta Frith’s TES interview, from an AuDHD therapist, coach, mental health nurse of over 30 years and late-diagnosed woman
I wasn’t really aware of what had happened until my friend and clinical psychologist Emma IFS & Neurodiversity messaged me on Saturday morning. What did I think about the article in TES? I have to say I was blissfully unaware at that time. But since then I have been feeling such a mix of emotions that I wanted to process a little before I wrote about it. Not only this - but the not so surprising fact that that this article and viewpoint had being given a weighty platform by other prominent psychologists.
I have had messages. Lots of them. From women who are shaking. From parents who have spent years fighting for their children’s diagnoses. From people who finally, after decades of not understanding themselves, had a word for what they were living with, and who have now had that word publicly questioned by someone the press is treating as an authority.
So me explain about what was said, and then let me be clear about why it is wrong.
